Bassai is a very old kata found in many traditional styles. Our variation resembles the Shotokan variant Bassai Dai but also has a heavy influence from the Tang Soo Do variant also known simply as Bassai.

Instructions

  1. Begin in ready position facing 12:00.
  2. Come up on toes, look up through mind­-body­-spirit triangle. Come back to flat feet, bring arms down, then back up the middle, together [right hand in fist, left hand palm open facing it].
  3. Twist left, then step out into right­-leg-­forward x-­stance facing 12:00, right augmented outer block.
  4. Turn into left­-leg-­forward front stance facing 6:00, left outer block, right outer block.
  5. Turn into right-­leg-­forward front stance facing 12:00, left inner block, right outer block.
  6. Grab opponent's head with right hand, slam into right knee, turn into right-leg-forward front stance facing 3:00, right inner block.
  7. Turn into horse stance facing 12:00, left outer block.
  8. Right middle punch, right outer block.
  9. Left middle punch, left outer block.
  10. Right middle punch, right outer block.
  11. Step forward into right-­leg-­forward back stance facing 12:00, right double knifehand strike.
  12. Step forward into left­-leg­-forward back stance, left double knifehand strike.
  13. Step forward into right-­leg-­forward back stance, right double knifehand strike.
  14. Step back into left­-leg­-forward back stance, left double knifehand strike.
  15. Right spear hand, grab opponent's gi with right hand, back leg side kick. Kiai! Jump over body, turn into left­-leg-­forward back stance facing 6:00, left double knifehand strike.
  16. Step forward into right-­leg-­forward back stance, right double knifehand strike.
  17. Step back into left­-leg­-forward back stance, left double knifehand strike.
  18. Step back, feet together. High chain break with foot avoidance, double hammer blow to temples into right­-leg-­forward front stance. Shuffle step into right-leg-­forward front stance, right middle punch.
  19. Turn into horse stance facing 3:00, left knifehand down block, left knifehand.
  20. Cup opponent's head with left hand, right leg inner crescent into hand, set down into horse stance facing 9:00, right elbow into hand.
  21. Left downblock, right downblock, left downblock.
  22. Chamber hands to right, left foot sweep into left­-leg-­forward back stance facing 6:00, u-punch.
  23. Chamber hands to left, right foot sweep into right­-leg­-forward back stance, u­punch.
  24. Chamber hands to right, left foot sweep into left­-leg-­forward back stance, u­punch.
  25. Shift into right­-leg-­forward back stance facing 12:00, left groin pull with right face block, right hand groin strike with left hand backfist behind.
  26. Bring feet together facing 9:00, left punch up, right punch down.
  27. Twist into left­-leg-­forward x­-stance facing 3:00, left backfist, right backfist.
  28. Step out into left­-leg­-forward back stance facing 12:00, right groin pull with left face block, left hand groin strike with right hand backfist behind.
  29. Turn into left­-leg-­forward arrow stance facing 9:00, right knifehand outer block toward 12:00.
  30. Turn into right­-leg­-forward arrow stance facing 3:00, left knifehand outer block toward 12:00.
  31. Step info left­-leg-­forward back stance facing 10:30, left double knifehand strike.
  32. Step into right­-leg­-forward back stance facing 1:30, right double knifehand strike.
  33. Bring feet together facing 12:00. Come up on toes, look up through mind­-body-­spirit triangle. Come back to flat feet, bring arms down, then back up the middle, together [right hand in fist, left hand palm open facing it]. Bow. Step back into ready position facing 12:00.
